In an ever-shifting cinematic landscape that over the past year has seen the likes of blockbusters such Wonder Woman, Black Panther, Creed II and Crazy Rich Asians alongside the trials and tribulations of indies like Yardie, We the Animals, Sorry to Bother You, Lionheart and Rafiki, you could have the impression that we are on the cusp of a watershed moment for films with casts from underrepresented groups.
With reference to the CAA Motion Picture Cast Diversity Index, the “Reinventing the Narrative” Industry Debate will feature the report’s findings on the enhanced international box-office performances of high-grossing films with diverse casts. How can we as an industry take action to bring to bear this business case for diverse films? How can we take action to create a more inclusive, receptive industry? How can marketing be made to seek out, simultaneously monetise and create an impact with diverse audiences? How can sales agents, distributors and marketing execs be a vector of change?
